ROLE OF MANAGERS
The managers in any organization are required to play a
variety of roles in order to ensure successful achieving of organizational
goals.
These are very well enumerated by Mintrberg
in the following ways
I) Inter-Personal Role
II) Informational Role
III) Decisional Role
I) Inter-Personal Role-
1.
Dealer: A business unit has to establish contacts with outsiders and
arrange dealings with business associates. This role insists manager to have
contacts and dealings with all on behalf of business. He heads the unit in the
authority structure of an organization.
2.
Link: He is going to represent his organization in all the external dealings
as a formality. Thus, he is a link between business unit and outsiders.
3.
Spokesman: He acts like a negotiator and spokesman for his organization.
A manager provides information of his unit as authorized person to all the
outsiders
.
II) Informational Role-
1.
Informant: A manager being a leader, liaision officer and head of
organization collects all the necessary information and shares with all persons
inside the organization. So, he tries to keep all men informed and create clear
understanding among all.
2.
Disseminator: A manager acts as a disseminator. It means that he
transmits special information into his organization from all outside sources.
3.
Negotiator: He is an authorised authority to negotiate and have talks
with all external parties, union leaders, executives of other organization etc.
III) Decisional Role-
1.
Innovator: He acts as a key person in bringing any changes in the
organization. Thus, he is expected to show entrepreneurship quality.
2.
Allocator: He judiciously decides about allocation of resources on the
basis of need and necessity.
3.
Finalizor: He decides the genuineness of terms and conditions while
entering the contract on behalf of organisation. He finalizes the negotiation
talks.
4.
Settler: He is to handle the disturbances in the organization. The risky
tasks like declining sales, losing of customers, employees’ strikes, mass
obscenities etc. are handled and decided by a manager as a leader.
These are the variety of roles played by a manager in an organisation.
