Difference between Management and Administration


 MANAGEMENT AND ADMINISTRATION

In general-usage, in most of the cases, both management and administrations are used interchangeably. It is also a much debated issue in the study of management. Even the confusion is also about the usage of organization. The debate is also about the distinction between management and administration.
          There are three schools of thought, which explain the concept and level of performance in the field of management study.
  1. School of Thought : (Administration > Management)
The first school of thought is Contributed by, William R. Spriegal, oliver Sheldon, Ordey Tread, William Schulze, Haimann, Sargent Florence and Lansberb.
According to them, The Administration is the top level/thinking function and the management is a lower level/execution function.

  1. School of thought : (Synonymous terms)
The second school of thought is contributed by Henry Fayol, Herold Koontz, O’Donnell, Latton E Mc-Ferland, Earnest Lale, and P.F. Drucker.
                   According to these thinkers,
                             Management = Adminitration

  1. School of thought : (Management > Administration)
This view is expressed by Kimball and Breach.
          According to them, Management is a genetic term and incorporates administration.

Distinct between Management and Administration:
          Through, in recent years, both management and administration are used synonymously. On a keen observation into the above schools of thought, the following distinctions can be made.

Meaning
It is an art and science of
getting the work done through others.

It is an art and
science of formation
of objectives, plans, policies of an  organization.

Nature
It is the execution function,
i.e., doing the activities.

It is the decision making process and thinking activity.

Level
It is related to the lower
and middle level
Management.

It is related to top
Level management.
Reward
Reward is a salary or commission as it deals with execution of policies.

Profit is reward as
is related to owners and framing policies.

Scope
The management has to work within the limit laid down by administration.

It sets the scope of operations for all persons and departments.

Contact with humans
It is directly concerned with direction of human efforts at the time of execution of plans.
Not directly connected to the human in execution and direction of the human efforts.
Status
It is the lower level managerial action.
It is the top level managerial action.
Functions
The functions include
directing, motivating, counseling.
The activities include
planning and a
Organizing.
Ability
It requires technical ability
to implement the plans.

It requires
administrative abilities
rather than technical
abilities.
Use of term
The term management is
widely used in private
sector business organ
It is mostly used in
government sector
i.e., a non-business
organization.
